I believe progressions are one of the best ways to predict life changes. Analyzing your natal-to-progressed and progressed-to-progressed aspects offer valuable insight into how your life will unfold over time.
But what about relationships?
In addition to natal synastry, you should also look into natal-to-progressed and progressed-to-progressed synastry to anticipate the future of your relationship. In fact, it is very common to see a strong progression to your partner’s chart, or vice-versa, when you begin a relationship with them. Keep reading to learn more about progressed synastry.
How do you calculate progressed synastry?
I do not have fancy software, so I have always compared charts manually.
First, I go to astro.com and take a screenshot of my and my partner’s natal and progressed charts. Then, I look at the degree of my natal planets (one by one) and compare them to the degrees of my partner’s progressed planets. For example, if my natal Venus is at 23 degrees Capricorn, I’ll check if my partner has any progressed planets at 23 degrees, then check what aspect it makes to my Venus.
I repeat the same process for my progressed chart to my partner’s natal chart, as well as my progressed chart to his progressed chart.

What does the research say?
According to research by Paul Westran, the onset of relationships are generally marked by the following synastry progressions (within 2 degrees):
- Most common: Sun conjunct, trine, opposite Venus (progressed-progressed, progressed-natal, natal-progressed)
- Venus conjunct, trine, opposite Venus (progressed-progressed, progressed-natal)
- Mars conjunct, trine, opposite Venus (progressed-progressed, progressed-natal)
He also found that relationships wax and wane when these progressions go in or out of orb.
What else should we consider?
Other Venus progressions
In my experience, it is important to track how each person’s progressed Venus aspects the other person’s natal or progressed planets. Venus is the sign of love, after all. Its progressions to another person’s chart can give you clues as to how your relationship will progress.
I broke up with my ex boyfriend when my progressed Venus was about a degree away from a square to his natal Pluto. A year later, when my progressed Venus made an exact square to his natal Pluto, he reappeared in my life. For several months, he repeatedly called and texted me, begging to get back together. I held my ground, but was shocked at how obsessed he had become after a year of not talking.
The 5th and 7th house ruler
One person’s natal or progressed 5th or 7th house ruler in aspect to another person’s natal or progressed planets or angles can signal the beginning (or ending) of a relationship. The 5th house ruler represents romance, while the 7th house ruler represents the marriage partner, so it makes sense that as these rulers progress and make aspects to another’s progressed and natal planets, changes to the relationship may occur.
For example, I began a relationship with my progressed Mercury (my 7th house ruler) was conjunct my partner’s progressed Uranus. It was exactly conjunct, to the minute, when he asked me out. In Uranus fashion, this was a sudden and unexpected romantic development for me. When our relationship ended, my progressed Mercury was exactly conjunct his progressed Saturn, to the minute.
My sister and her husband have a very powerful progression in their chart: his progressed Jupiter, the ruler of his 1st house, is sextile her natal Saturn, the ruler of her 7th house. Because his progressed Jupiter is currently retrograde, it has been progressing very slowly over the years, so the Jupiter-Saturn connection they share has been in aspect since they met, and will continue for a long while.
Angles
Westran did not have the birth data for every chart he studied, and he mentioned that angles (particularly the Descendant) should be considered in progressed synastry analysis. Progressed planets to natal angles or progressed angles to progressed or natal planets are indicative of feelings of love and admiration for another.
For example, one my my ex boyfriend’s progressed Venus was exactly conjunct my natal Descendant when we met. We broke up, but my feelings for him did not dissapate until his Venus was out of orb (his progressed Venus was retrograde and in my 6th house when we broke up).
Vertex
In my personal experience, progressions to the Vertex in synastry is a very powerful aspect. If you are in love with someone, and their progressed planet is near your progressed or natal Vertex, it is a sign the relationship is fated and you will learn many lessons from each other.
For example, I began a 4-year long relationship with a man whose Venus was a degree away from my natal Vertex. We ended up breaking up when his Venus went out of orb of my Venus, and when my progressed Mars squared his natal Uranus.
Overall, it is important to look at all progressions, especially those involving Venus, the 5th house ruler, the 7th house ruler, the angles, and the Vertex. These progressions will give you clues as to how the relationship might ‘play out’ over time.
