Descendant Synastry

We often talk about aspects to the Ascendant, but what about the Descendant?

The Ascendant and Descendant are opposing angles: the Ascendant represents our physical self and persona, while the Descendant represents our close, intimate relationships. The Descendant has to do with the type of partners we attract, and who we are most attracted to.

When someone’s planet is conjunct your Descendant, you feel you have met your match. Depending on the planet (and the aspects it makes to other planets and angles in your chart), this person might even be your ideal partner! Your partner is equally attracted to you, and sees you as their ‘other half’.

Conjunctions to the Descendant can be read similarly to a 7th house overlay, but they are more powerful. Also, the conjunction can also occur when one person’s planet is in another person’s 6th house, near the cusp of the 7th house.

In this article, we go over synastry interpretations of planets conjunct the Descendant (or opposite the Ascendant)

Sun conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Sun opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

Sun conjunct Descendant in syanstry is one of the most powerful aspects you can find in a synastry. This aspect indicates a strong level of attraction and compatibility.

The Descendant person feels the Sun person is their ideal match, and feels magnetically attracted to them. Indeed, the Sun person’s overall personality is very appealing to the Descendant person, as it is a mirror to their own personality.  This aspect is very binding, particularly for the Descendant person, as the Sun person makes them feel more balanced and complete.

The Sun person also feels very attracted to the Descendant person, not only for their physical appearance, but also for how natural it feels to be together. The two of them feel they have found their ‘other half’ in each other, and feel a strong desire to be around each other often.

Moon conjunct Descendant in Synastry is another powerful, binding aspect, and is commonly seen in the charts of married couples.

This aspect indicates compatibility at the emotional level. The Descendant person has a strong emotional attachment to the Moon person, and may even become dependent on them for emotional support and nurturing. The Moon person is sensitive to the Descendant person’s moods, and provides support and understanding in the relationship.

The Descendant person loves being around the Moon person, and feels a natural inclination to partner with them. The Moon person also feels a strong desire to partner with the Descendant person, feeling as though they have found their other half.

The Descendant person feels safe and comforted when they are with the Moon person, as the Moon person creates a safe space for the Descendant person to express themselves.

I’ve found that Moon in the 7th house couples have a very special emotional bond which can be noticed by others around them.

Both parties learn a lot about compromise and harmony through this relationship. They are open to each other’s ideas and respect each other’s intellects. Each partner feel ‘heard’ in this relationship, and talk through their issues in a fair and balanced way.

The Venus person is ideal to the Descendant person; the Descendant person loves the Venus person’s style, beauty, and the way they express love and affection. Indeed, the Descendant person might idealize the Venus person greatly, and see them as the ‘perfect partner’.

Through the relationship with the Venus person, the Descendant person learns a lot about relationships, relating, equality and harmony.

The Venus person is also highly attracted to the Descendant person. They love the way the Descendant person looks, and how they relate to others. They enjoy socializing with the Descendant person, and complement each other socially.

To others, they come across as the perfect couple.

Mars conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Mars opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

This aspect indicates a high level of attraction between the partners. The Descendant person is drawn to the Mars person, and falls in love with their sexual energy and drive. The Mars person is also very sexually attracted to the Descendant person, and will want to pursue the Descendant person.

At the same time, this aspect can be somewhat problematic when it comes to disagreements. The Mars person can be quite dominating or argumentative, especially when it comes to relationship matters. In this relationship, it is important to work together to come up with solutions, rather than treat each other as enemies.

Jupiter conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Jupiter opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

This aspect is a wonderful aspect to share in Synastry! Jupiter conjunct Descendant in synastry blends one person’s planet of expansion and joy with another person’s relationship area.

The Descendant person feels much joy from being with the Jupiter person, as the Jupiter person brings joy, positivity and expansion to the Descendant person’s life. This placement can definitely signify marriage if other aspects are supportive.

In this relationship, the Jupiter person’s honesty and open-mindedness are highly attractive to the Descendant person. The two of them may enjoy traveling or going on adventures together.

Saturn conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Saturn opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

Saturn conjunct Descendant in synastry can be both positive and negative. Check the other aspects Saturn to determine how this aspect will play out in the relationship.

On the positive side, the Saturn person teaches the Descendant person how to be more responsible and mature when it comes to long-term commitment. In many cases, this aspect is indicative of marriage, as it increases the longevity of the connection, as well as the commitment and duty they feel to one another.

On the downside, the Descendant person may feel their Saturn partner is too stuffy or cold, or even parental, towards them. To the Descendant person, the relationship may feel heavy or burdensome in some way, especially if the Descendant person is a non-traditional type.

The Saturn person may be resistant or cause delays in romance between the couple due to insecurity, or due to external obstacles.

Uranus conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Uranus opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

Uranus conjunct Descendant in synastry indicates instant attraction between the partners. The Descendant person in particular finds the Uranus person highly attractive, exciting, and different than anyone they have met before.

Despite the high level of attraction between them, the relationship may be unsteady or unpredictable, given the erratic nature of Uranus. Over time, the Descendant person might not feel they can rely or depend on the Uranus person in times of need. It may be difficult to get the Uranus person to make a steady commitment to the Descendant person. On the good side, the Uranus person teaches the Descendant person to be more independent and detached in relationships.

Neptune conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Neptune opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

This aspect indicates a dream-like connection between the partners. In this relationship, both partners, particularly the Descendant person, feel they have met their ideal match our soulmate in each other. The Neptune person brings a dreamy, compassionate, sensitive energy into the Descendant person’s relationships sector that feels both fantasy-like and confusing.

Due to the hazy nature of Neptune, there may be difficultly in defining the relationship or where the relationship is going. The Neptune person can be vague or indirect when it comes to relationship matters, which can be quite frustrating for the Descendant person. If both partners are clear and honest with each other, this beautiful relationship could last a lifetime.

Pluto conjunct Descendant in Synastry (or Pluto opposite Ascendant in Synastry)

This aspect indicates a strong attraction between the partners. In fact, they may even be obsessed with each other! The Pluto person completely transforms the way the Descendant person looks at relationships.

At the same time, jealousy, obsession and possessiveness may feature strongly in this relationship. There may be a strong ‘can’t live with you, can’t live without you’ energy between them. The couple may experience many power struggles when it comes to relationship matters. The Pluto person, in particular, might be very forceful or controlling over the relationship, which could cause resentment and frustrations on behalf of the Descendant person.

If these two can learn to work together, the intense bond they share could a lifetime.
