The Astrology of Divorce

Divorce can be very hard to predict, but astrology can help us determine what kinds of aspects would make a divorce more likely. In this article, we discuss which aspects can point to divorce in the natal chart and composite chart, as well as transits and progressions that point to breakups and separation.

Natal chart aspects:

Uranus

The planet Uranus represents freedom, change, and independence. When it is connected to the 7th house, an erratic and unpredictable romantic life is indicated. Some people with strong Uranus in their charts don’t bother marrying at all, while others opt for unconventional relationships. Many Uranian folks also tend to get into on-off relationships that start and end very quickly. As a result, Uranus is usually strongly connected to the 7th house of divorcees.

Here are some aspects to look out for:

  • Uranus in the 7th house: Uranus is the planet or freedom, unpredictability and instability, so its presence in the 7th house of partnership can indicate divorce
  • Uranus in hard aspect to the Ascendant: Uranus conjunct, square or opposite the Ascendant can indicate unstable relationships and quick beginnings and endings.
  • Uranus in hard aspect to the ruler of the 7th house
  • Uranus in hard aspect to a planet in the 7th house
  • Uranus in hard aspect to Venus

Examples:

  • Kim Kardashian’s 7th house ruler, Mercury, is conjunct her natal Uranus
  • Kanye West’s 7th house ruler, Saturn, is square his natal Uranus
  • Ariana Grande’s Uranus is exactly conjunct her Ascendant, and opposes her 7th house Mercury
  • Elizabeth Taylor has an exact Venus-Uranus conjunction
  • Brad Pitt has Uranus square Ascendant
  • Kris Jenner’s 7th house ruler, Neptune, is square Uranus
  • Angelina Jolie ‘s Ascendant and Venus are square Uranus
  • Ben Affleck’s Ascendant and Venus are square Uranus

Neptune

The planet Neptune represents dreams, illusions, and deception. When it is connected to the 7th house, an very romantic and spiritual romantic life is indicated. It indicates the native is very idealistic when it comes to love and romance, and tend to see their partners through rose-colored glasses. The native tends to fall in love with who they think or hope their partner is, rather than who they actually are. Neptunian individuals tend to see the best in others and ignore red flags, leading to much disappointment later on.

It is thus unsurprising strong Neptune contacts are commonly seen in the charts of divorcees.

Here are some aspects to look out for:

  • Neptune in the 7th house: Neptune is the planet of illusions, deception and dreams, so its presence in the 7th house of partnership can lead to separation
  • Neptune in hard aspect to the Ascendant: Neptune conjunct, square or opposite the Ascendant can indicate idealistic and unrealistic relationships
  • Neptune in hard aspect to the ruler of the 7th house
  • Neptune in hard aspect to a planet in the 7th house
  • Neptune in hard aspect to Venus

Examples:

  • Ariana Grande’s Neptune is exactly conjunct her Ascendant, opposite her 7th house Mercury
  • Nicole Kidman’s Venus is square Neptune
  • Liz Taylor’s 7th house ruler, Mercury, is opposite Neptune
  • Kim Kardashian’s Venus is square Neptune
  • Jennifer Garner’s 7th house ruler, Saturn, is opposite Neptune

Jupiter

Jupiter was strongly in some of the divorce charts I looked at, although not as strongly as Uranus and Neptune. Jupiter is the sign of abundance, so when it is associated with the 7th house, it can point to someone who will have several relationships throughout their life. This does not necessarily mean divorce, but it can indicate several marriages, especially if the individual has other divorce aspects in their chart.

Aspects to consider:

  • Jupiter in hard aspect to Venus
  • Jupiter in hard aspect to 7th house ruler
  • Jupiter in the 7th house

Pluto

Pluto was featured strongly in some of the divorce charts I looked at, as well. Pluto is the sign of death and rebirth, so it makes sense that some divorcees have this planet connected to their 7th house.  In the worst case, it is often betrayal, abuse, and/or power struggles that breaks the couple apart.

Aspects to consider:

  • Pluto in hard aspect to 7th house ruler
  • Pluto in hard aspect to Venus
  • Pluto in the 7th house

Synastry & Composite

Whether a couple gets divorced can be seen via the Composite chart.

What about Synastry? In my opinion, the Composite chart paints a more accurate picture of divorce potential in a chart. Why? Synastry shows how you affect each others, and how you feel each other, while the Composite is the chart of the relationship itself. In astrology, the relationship is a separate entity in itself, so we can determine the ultimate fate of a relationship more accurately.

As with natal chart aspects, Uranus and Neptune aspects are largely seen in the Composite Charts of divorced couples.

This is because Uranus represents instability and unpredictability, which can lead to abrupt endings and beginnings. The relationship is usually very exciting and refreshing, but also unreliable and frustrating. These types of relationships tend to begin out of the blue, and usually bring together two people who are not each other’s usual type. Feelings develop quickly, but unfortunately might dissipate very quickly, leading to an abrupt end.

Composite Uranus aspects to look out for:

  • Composite 7th house ruler in hard aspect to the Composite Uranus: This indicates a relationship that is erratic, unstable, unpredictable, yet exciting and unconventional. When Composite Uranus is conjunct, square or opposite the Composite 7th house ruler, the commitment between the partners can be shaky and unreliable.
  • Composite Uranus in the 7th house: The 7th house represents commitment and partnership, so having Composite Uranus in this house can indicate a lack of long-term commitment, especially if it makes unfavourable aspects to the 1st or 7th house ruler(s).
  • Composite Uranus in hard aspect to the Ascendant: This aspect points to disruptions, unpredictability, and instability in the relationship, and can result in abrupt beginnings and endings.

Examples:

  • Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s Composite 7th house ruler, Mars, is square Uranus
  • Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Composite Uranus sits exactly on their Composite Ascendant, opposite their Composite Mercury on the Descendant.

Neptune tends to cloud our judgement to the point we ignore enormous red flags waving in our faces.  Under Neptune’s influence, we are wearing rose-colored glasses and feel we have found our soulmate in our partner. This planet is sweet, loving, and fantasy-like, which is intoxicating and addictive to each partner.

Unfortunately, Neptune is strongly featured in the composite charts of couples where one, or both, of the partners eventually feels deceived by the other. Self-deception is perhaps an even stronger problem in these cases. In the end, these relationships can end in much disappointment and heartbreak, and a feeling the marriage was based on a lie. Now, Neptune does not guarantee a divorce, but it at least points to some deception (or self-deception) and disappointments along the way. In fact, it is possible the couple will separate and reunite many times due to the dreamy, fantasy-like connection they share.

  • Composite 7th house ruler in hard aspect to the Composite Neptune: This indicates a relationship that is idealistic and spiritual, but also illusory, deceptive, and confusing. When Composite Neptune is conjunct, square or opposite the Composite 7th house ruler, a lack of boundaries and honesty with each others can lead to Tdisappointment and separation later on
  • Composite Neptune in the 7th house: The 7th house represents commitment and partnership, so having Composite Neptune in this house can indicate loose boundaries and commitment issues, but it can also indicate a beautiful and idealistic relationship. How Neptune is aspected is very important, so assess the aspects to Composite Neptune in detail.
  • Composite Neptune in hard aspect to the Ascendant: This aspect can indicate confusion, lack of boundaries, and dishonesty in the relationship, which can lead to disappointment and separation.

Examples:

  • Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s Composite 7th house ruler, Venus, is opposite Neptune
  • Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Composite 7th house ruler, Mars, is square Composite Neptune

Transits & Progressions

There are several transits and progressions that can point to a separation or divorce. If someone is going through a divorce, they will be able to see it in their transits and Progressions.

Transits

Uranus transits to relationship points indicate sudden and unexpected separations and breakups

  • Transiting Uranus in hard aspect the 7th house ruler
  • Transiting Uranus in hard aspect to the Ascendant (conjunct, square, opposite)
  • Transiting Uranus in the 7th house
  • Transiting Uranus in hard aspect to Venus

Neptune transits to relationship points indicate confusion, deception, and disillusionment, which can lead to separations and breakups

  • Transiting Neptune in hard aspect to the 7th house ruler
  • Transiting Neptune in hard aspect to the Ascendant (conjunct, square, opposite)
  • Transiting Neptune in the 7th house
  • Transiting Neptune in hard aspect to Venus

Pluto is the planet of death and transformation. When it touches a relationship point in your chart, your partnership transforms in some way, sometimes in the form of a separation or divorce.

  • Transiting Pluto in hard aspect to the 7th house
  • Transiting Pluto in hard aspect to the Ascendant (conjunct, square, opposite)
  • Transiting Pluto in the 7th house
  • Transiting Pluto in hard aspect to Venus

Saturn transits are like the “final nail on the coffin” transits that forces a final decision to split.

  • Transiting Saturn in hard aspect the 7th house ruler
  • Transiting Saturn in hard aspect to the Ascendant (conjunct, square, opposite)
  • Transiting Saturn in the 7th house
  • Transiting Saturn in hard aspect to Venus

Progressions

There are so many progressions that can point to relationship changes. Progressions usually mirror transits, so you will often see the same planets involved in both charts. For example, my progressed Venus was square my natal Saturn when I went through a break up. On the day we broke up, transiting Saturn was exactly square my natal Venus.

Examples of what to look for in the progressed-to-progressed chart (this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Hard aspects between the progressed Descendant and progressed Saturn Uranus, Pluto, or Neptune (for example, progressed Ascendant conjunct progressed Pluto)
  • Hard aspects from progressed 7th house ruler to progressed Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, or Neptune
  • Progressed Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, Neptune in hard aspect to planet in the progressed 7th house

I personally love looking at the progressed chart on its own, as it paints a picture of the present and gives us a lot of insight into upcoming events.

Natal to progressed aspects are also very important to consider, as they also offer great insights and information.

Examples of what to look for in the natal-to-progressed chart (this is not an exhaustive list):
