The Worst Aspects in Synastry

Earlier, we discussed the best synastry aspects you can find in a astrology compatibility chart.

But what about the ‘bad’ ones? Which synastry aspects are considered detrimental to a relationship? Let’s discuss.

The worst synastry aspects

Sun square Mars, Sun opposite Mars

This aspect is tough to handle , especially those who do not like too much conflict or drama in their relationships. The Sun and Mars are both confrontational and driven planets. so a square aspects between them in synastry can lead to much frustration and ego clashes.

In this couple, competitiveness is taken to a new level. These two may see each other more as enemies rather than partners, and tend to irritate each other easily. At some point, the irritation and conflict may become too much, resulting in a huge blowout.

Moon square Mars, Moon opposite Mars

Hard aspects between one person’s Mars and another person’s Moon indicates petty arguments and hurt feelings. In this relationship, the couple know how to get under each other’s skin.

The Moon person may find the Mars person overly aggressive, rude, and hurtful, while the Mars person thinks the Moon person is overly sensitive and emotional. Indeed, the Moon person is very sensitive to any perceived meanness or aggression from the Mars person, and vice versa. There is a tendency to taking things “the wrong way” in this relationship. It is hard to discuss feelings without hurting each other.

Mars square Mars, Mars opposite Mars

This is another tough aspect. Mars is the planet of energy and action, so when it is in square aspect to another person’s Mars, frustrations and conflicts may feature strongly in the relationship. This couple is very competitive with each other, but not in a healthy way. These two easily irritate and annoy one another, which can make it hard to stay together in the long run.

This aspect also does not bode very well in the bedroom. It shows different likes and dislikes, and dissimilar rhythms and energies.

Sun square Saturn, Sun opposite Saturn

This aspect can be tough in a relationship. The Sun person feels stifled and restricted by the Saturn person, while the Saturn person may feel the Sun person is immature and impractical.

The Sun person may eventually feel they are treated like a child by the Saturn person. For the Saturn person, it can be hard not to criticize the Sun person, for they see the Sun person as childish and irresponsible. This relationship can have a negative effect on the Sun person’s self-esteem in the long run.

Moon square Saturn, Moon opposite Saturn

The square between one person’s Moon and another person’s Saturn indicates emotional distancing and censoring. In this relationship, the Moon person does not feel safe and free to express their emotional needs. Instead, they feel afraid to express themselves to the Saturn person, out of fear the Saturn person will reject or disapprove of the Moon’s feelings.

The Saturn person feels the Moon person is overly sensitive and needy, while the Moon person finds the Saturn person cold and impersonal. In this relationship, the Saturn person probably feels awkward about emotional communication, so they discourage the Moon person from expressing themselves.

Venus square Saturn, Venus opposite Saturn

This is a classic indicator of relationship difficulties. In this relationship, the couple feels awkward expressing their love and affection to each other. This is because the Saturn person tends to discourage the Venus person from doing so. It can be very difficult to understand what each person feels in this relationship.

This aspect also indicates there could be barriers standing in the way of this couple formalizing a partnership. Sometimes differences in cultures, religions, social classes are indicated by this aspect.

Mars square Saturn, Mars opposite Saturn

This aspect is a tough one, and indicates much frustration and conflict in the relationship. The Mars person feels stifled and restricted by the Saturn person, and feel that nothing they do is ‘good enough’ for the Saturn person. Saturn wants to repress the Mars person’s energy and drive, for they find the Mars person very childish, impatient and impulsive.

The Saturn person may frequently get annoyed with the Mars person, while the Mars person finds the Saturn person to be a wet blanket. The Mars person feels they cannot express their assertive side without upsetting Saturn. This aspect can be a recipe for disaster, with both partners feeling frustrated with the other.

Sun square Uranus, Sun opposite Uranus

Uranus is the planet of freedom and liberation, so when it is square another person’s Sun, it can cause relationship issues. This relationship may have begun very suddenly and unexpectedly.

The Uranus person is generally unreliable and unpredictable when it comes to fulfilling their obligations to the Sun person. In turn, the Sun person might not feel they can rely on the Uranus person in times of need. Something always seems to get in the way of their relationship, and the plans they make together often do not pan out. This relationship has a strong on-off quality, and it can be difficult for these two to settle into a committed partnership.

Venus square Neptune, Venus opposite Neptune

If you have this aspect natally, everyone around your age has their Neptune in square aspect to your Venus.

This aspect can be problematic because of the confusion and deception Neptune tends to bring to a relationship. The Venus person feels the Neptune person is their soulmate, and vice-versa, but there can be difficultly when it comes to committing to each other fully.

When issues arise in this relationship, this couple is likely to ignore conflict and sweet their troubles under the rug. Other may think the couple is not in touch with reality because of their refusal to see the relationship for what it is.

The Venus person (or the Neptune person) projects their ideals on their partner. There may be a tendency to overpromise and underdeliver in this relationship. They see their partner as someone other than who they really are, which can cause issues later one when the rose-colored glasses are removed.

Mars square Pluto, Mars opposite Pluto

At first, this relationship can be quite enthralling and exciting.  The sensual connection between you is off the charts! Over time, however, issues related to power, control, and anger may surface in the relationship.

Mars is the planet of energy and assertiveness. Mars shows our drive and ambition, and how we project our energies. Pluto, on the other hand, is the planet of transformation and power. In this relationship, when the Mars person asserts their will in the relationship, the Pluto person pushes back even harder. Pluto may resort to manipulative games in order to keep the Mars person ‘in line’, which angers the Mars person even more.

In this relationship, strong feelings are evoked on both sides. Each partner really knows how to push each other’s buttons and get under each other’s skin. At worst, this aspect can indicate physical conflict and violence.

Neptune-Neptune Aspects

Neptune in conjunction to another person’s Neptune indicates you two are likely around the same age. This aspect indicates the two of you connect over shared spiritual goals and reinforce each other’s dreams and fantasies. It is important to check how each person’s Neptune is aspected for more information.

For example, if Person A’s Venus is square their Neptune, Person B’s Neptune is also square Person A’s Neptune. In this case, Person B reinforces Person A’s relationship fantasies and illusions, and may deceive Person A in some way (and Person A is likely deceiving themselves, as well).

Neptune in trine or sextile aspect to another person’s Neptune is a sweet aspect. It indicates they bond over spiritual matters, and are very sensitive to each other’s moods and feelings.

Neptune square or opposite another person’s Neptune indicates a large age difference between the two. This aspect indicates the two partners are at odds with each other, particularly when it comes to spirituality and intuition. It may be difficult for these two to get a ‘read’ on each other, and there may be many misunderstandings between them. The two of them may inadvertently deceive or play into each other’s fantasies.

Pluto-Neptune Aspects

Neptune in conjunction to another person’s Pluto indicates a deeply transformative spiritual bond.  This is a generational aspect, but it can still be significant, especially if Neptune and Pluto are powerfully aspected in each person’s respective natal chart. The Neptune person feels empowered by the Pluto person, and feels their intuition and spirituality are strengthened by their relationship.

In addition, the Neptune person may feel very ‘exposed’ by the Pluto person, for the Pluto person has significant insight into the Neptune person’s inner world. The Pluto person has a lot of control over the the Neptune person’s spiritual practices, fantasies, and imagination.

Neptune in trine or sextile aspect to another person’s Pluto is a sweet aspect. It indicates a powerful spiritual bond between the two that is helpful in any relationship.

Neptune square or opposite another person’s Pluto indicates there may be power struggles in this relationship between the couple. The Pluto person wants to transform the Neptune person, particularly when it comes to the Neptune person’s spirituality, ideals, compassion, and delusions.

The Neptune person may not appreciate the Pluto person’s desire to overpower or control them. At the same time, the Pluto person might find the Neptune person over idealistic and hard to understand. Pluto wants absolute truth and honesty, and may become irritated with Neptune’s vague and confusing actions. As a result, these two may experience conflicts and power struggles in their relationship.

Venus-Neptune in Synastry

Venus is the planet of beauty, pleasure, and harmony, and rules our one-on-one relationships. Neptune is the planet of fantasy, dreams, idealism and delusion.

When Venus meets Neptune in synastry, a soul connection is indicated. You probably met each other when you were looking for the relationship of your dreams.

We all have an idea of our perfect match, our knight in shining armor with whom we will share a fairy-tale love story. When someone’s Neptune makes an aspect to your Venus, you feel as though your dreams have come true.

With this aspect comes the tendency to view each other in the best light possible. The little, or big, characteristics that would normally bother you about someone are glossed over in favor of their better qualities.

The Venus person tends to project her fantasies onto the Neptune person, assigning him the qualities of her ideal match. The Neptune person may or may not actually possess these qualities, but tends to play along to please the Venus person.

The couple gets caught up in the other-worldliness and fantasy the relationship offers. This can cause major problems later on, as Neptune is bound to err in some way or another, which leads to disappointment on the part of the Venus person.

Venus’ refusal to see Neptune for who he really is lends itself to self-defeating behavior; in reality, no one is perfect, so Neptune will eventually fall off the pedestal Venus holds him so highly upon.

Another danger of this aspect is outright deception. Yes, Neptune feels pressure to fulfill the fantasies of the Venus person. Like Venus, Neptune aims to please. This desire to keep Venus’ fantasy alive could lead Neptune to lie and deceive the Venus person.

While on some level, Venus may feel something is not quite right, she subconsciously chooses to overlook these inconsistencies, thereby ignoring the truth to keep the dream alive. Usually, Venus eventually realizes Neptune is human, and he isn’t perfect, which can lead to disappointment and a broken heart.

Another manifestation of this aspect involves a victim-savior scenario. Venus may be drawn to Neptune because he needs “help”. Perhaps he is an alcoholic. Perhaps he is a drug addict.

Perhaps he has unresolved issues from the past which he is dealing with. Neptune draws out Venus’ compassion and sensitivity, stimulating her desire to “save” him. This can be dangerous, as the relationship can become unhealthily co-dependent.

The preceding description is especially applicable to hard synastry aspects (conjunction, square, opposition)  between Venus and Neptune. The harmonious aspects (sextile and trine) are less intense, and foster the positive characteristics of Venus-Neptune aspects such as compassion, forgiveness, and a feeling of unity.
