Saturn represents duty, responsibility, commitment, pessimism and burdens, among many other things. Saturn connections in synastry and composite are key to a long-lasting relationship, in my opinion.
In synastry, it is important to look at where your partner’s Saturn lands in your chart and how it aspects your planets. Check out which house your loved one’s Saturn resides: this is the area in which your partner expresses their Saturnian qualities.
How you feel about this energy depends a lot on your natal chart, your partner’s natal chart, and your synastry/Composite charts. If your partner’s Saturn aspects your planets harshly, the negative qualities of Saturn may express themselves through this house. Keep reading to learn more!
Saturn in the 1st house
The placement of one person’s Saturn in the other person’s 1st house indicates the Saturn person feels responsible to the 1st house person and the way they present themselves to the world. Perhaps Saturn wants to restrict or change the 1st house person in some way, in regards to how they express their individuality. Saturn helps the 1st house person ‘grow up’ and present a more mature and professional version of themselves to others.
On the downside, the 1st house person may feel the Saturn person is very critical of them. The 1st house person may not feel they can fully ‘be themselves’ around the Saturn person, out of fear that the Saturn person will criticize or disapprove. How the 1st house person receives the Saturn person really depends on the rest of the chart.
I have dated men who have their Saturn in my Sagittarius first house, and it did not work well. Sagittarius is such a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky, optimistic sign, so the Saturn person felt like a wet blanket.
Saturn in the 2nd house
The placement of one person’s Saturn in the other person’s 2nd house indicates the Saturn person feels responsible to the 2nd house person and their realm of financial security and self-worth. In this case, Saturn helps the 2nd person to be more careful and cautious with their spending. Perhaps Saturn encouraged the 2nd house person to invest and save their money. This would be an excellent placement if the Saturn person is the accountant to the 2nd house person.
On the downside, the 2nd house person may find the Saturn person very miserly and cheap. The 2nd house person might not appreciate the Saturn person’s need to control their finances, and may feel they need to hide big purchases from the Saturn person.
Saturn in the 3rd house
The 3rd house represents communication, so the Saturn person may help the 3rd house person become more mature in the way they express themselves. If the house person is generally very chatty, they will be less so around the Saturn person, particularly when it comes to small talk. The Saturn person encourages the 3rd house person to be more cautious with their words, and to think before they speak.
On the downside, the 3rd house person may feel they cannot express themselves freely with the Saturn person. Perhaps they feel the Saturn person is pessimistic or cynical to their thoughts and ideas, or maybe the Saturn person has the nasty habit of always interrupting them. The 3rd house person may eventually feel they need to censor their thoughts and ideas around the Saturn person, which can lead to awkward silences and feeling ignored.
Saturn in the 4th house
The placement of Saturn in another person’s 4th house indicates a great amount of duty and responsibility felt by both parties. In this case, the Saturn person helps the 4th house person take on a more responsible and mature attitude towards their home and family. If the 4th house person has issues with ‘settling down’, the Saturn person will help them do so.
On the downside, the Saturn person may feel like a burden to the 4th house person. Being at home with this person may feel like a duty or responsibility. My cousin has this aspect with her father (the Saturn person), and it very clearly describes the incredible burden he has had on her life (his Saturn is horribly aspected, by the way).
It may be difficult for the 4th house person to express their ‘inner child’ to the Saturn person, likely due to the burden of responsibility and duty present in the relationship. Being at home with the Saturn person may always feel like “work” for the 4th house person. However, depending on the 4th house person’s chart, they might be ok with this (check the synastry!)
If the Saturn person is not a family member, they may influence the 4th house person’s relationship with their family; for example, the Saturn person may cause a separation (or reunion) between the 4th house person and their family.
Saturn in the 5th house
The placement of someone’s Saturn in another person’s 5th house indicates the combination of responsibility and duty with the house of fun and romance. The 5th house is a very loving, creative house, so Saturn’s placement here in synastry can be challenging. On the good side, the Saturn person encourages the 5th house person to be more mature and responsible in their creativity and self-expression. This placement can also indicate the 5th house person will feel more (or less) inclined to have children due to the influence of the Saturn person.
On the downside, the 5th house person may feel their creative and playful side is repressed by the Saturn person. Perhaps the 5th house person feels criticized or belittled when they display their talents to the Saturn person. The Saturn person may feel like a ‘wet blanket’ to the 5th house person, so the 5th house person may prefer to socialize and have fun without the Saturn person.
Saturn in the 6th house
The placement of Saturn in someone else’s 6th house can be a positive aspect. The 6th house represents health, routines, duty, and work, so Saturn’s placement here encourages the 6th house person to be more cautious, responsible and mature in these areas.
Perhaps the Saturn person helps the 6th house person to lose weight or adopt a strict health regiment. These two feel a strong duty to one another, and are generally very helpful to each other. In normal circumstances, these two work very well as a team and can accomplish a lot together.
On the downside, the 6th house person may find the Saturn person very cynical or controlling. The 6th house person might not appreciate Saturn’s desire to change the 6th house person’s work or health routines, and may feel they need to hide certain parts of their life to avoid Saturn’s criticism.
For example, the Saturn person might not approve of the 6th house person’s diet, so the 6th house person may eat their favourite foods secretly. The 6th house person may feel very criticized and ‘picked apart’ by the Saturn person, which may cause stress and anxiety. This placement can also indicate the Saturn person is dependent on the 6th house person in some way, and the 6th house person may feel burdened by them.
Saturn in the 7th house
The placement of a person’s Saturn in another person’s 7th house is excellent for commitment and responsibility. I often see this placement in the synastry charts of married couples, which is not surprising!
The 7th house person feels duty and commitment towards the Saturn person, and vice-versa. In this relationship, it may have taken the couple a while to get together, given that Saturn often brings delays. When they finally get together, they want to build a stable partnership that lasts. The 7th house person admires and feels secure with the Saturn person, and the Saturn person increases the 7th house person’s desire for commitment and partnership.
On the downside, if Saturn is badly aspected via natal or synastry aspects, there may be barriers which prevent the couple from being together. In addition, the 7th house person may feel the Saturn person progresses too slowly in the relationship, or may feel the relationship is a burden in some way. For example, you may see this placement in an ‘arranged’ marriage, given Saturn’s connection to duty and traditions.
Saturn in the 8th house
The placement of Saturn in someone else’s 8th house is a powerful placement. In this case, the Saturn person may help the 8th house person become more responsible and mature in matters of intimacy and transformation.
The 8th house also rules shared resources and money, so the Saturn person might provide stability and responsibility to the 8th house person in this way. Perhaps the Saturn person will help the 8th house person make decisions on long-term investments and other financial decisions.
On the downside, this aspect can create difficulties in intimacy and deep bonding. The 8th house is about merging deeply with someone and learning each and every one of their deep dark secrets. It is also about physical and emotional intimacy.
This placement indicates the 8th house person may feel they cannot fully share and merge themselves with the Saturn person. Perhaps the 8th house person feels the Saturn person will not approve of or support the 8th house person’s need for deep intimacy and bonding. As a result, the 8th house person may feel quite unsatisfied or repressed by the Saturn person.
Saturn in the 9th house
The 9th house represents travel, philosophy, and higher learning. A person’s Saturn in another person’s 9th house indicates the Saturn person encourages the 9th house person to be more mature and responsible in these areas. Perhaps the Saturn person helps the 9th house person with their education, or to structure or define their beliefs.
If the 9th house person is very fixed or rigid in their beliefs, this could cause an issues and tensions between the couple. The 9th house person may feel the Saturn person belittles or criticizes the 9th house person’s philosophies, which could definitely lead to heated debates and conflict. Traveling together may feel burdensome, and the 9th house person may feel the Saturn person holds them back from the adventures they’d prefer to be having.
Saturn in the 10th house
The 10th house and Saturn go hand-in-hand: the 10th house represents career, duties, and status, while Saturn represents responsibility and hard work.
It would not be surprising to see this placement in the chart of a boss-employee relationship, as Saturn also represents authority. The Saturn person helps the 10th house person define and achieve their career goals, and may even open up doors to help the 10th house person gain a higher social status. The 10th house person feels supported by the Saturn person, and becomes more mature and responsible under Saturn’s guidance.
On the downside, this placement can also indicate the Saturn person blocks the 10th house person’s career or social status in some way (check the synastry), or may be too burdensome or controlling over their career.
Saturn in the 11th house
The 11th house represents friendships, groups/clubs, and long-term goals. Someone’s Saturn in another person’s 11th house indicates the Saturn person encourages the 11th house person to be more responsible and mature these areas.
Perhaps the Saturn person wants the 11th house person to have more responsible friends. The Saturn person might introduce the 11th house person to friends who are older or more mature, and who are a better influence over the 11th house person. Saturn might also help the house person make their long terms dreams come true.
On the downside, the Saturn person may cause separations between the 11th house person and their friends. The 11th house person’s friends might not like the Saturn person, and may find them boring, misery, or like a ‘wet blanket’. As a result, the house person may feel they need to keep the Saturn person separate from their friends.
Saturn in the 12th house
The 12th house represents dreams, spirituality, escapism, and isolation, among many other themes.
Saturn’s placement in another person’s 12th house is an interesting one. If the 12th house person struggles a lot with 12th house issues, such as drugs and other escapist activities, the Saturn person can help them greatly.
Saturn can also help the 12th house person deal with their subconscious feelings and help them become more realistic with them. This placement can also indicate the two of them are on a strict spiritual path in which the Saturn acts like a guru to the 12th house person.
On the downside, the Saturn person may be a burden to the 12th house person in some way (i.e. perhaps the Saturn person is sick in some way, and the 12th house person is forced to take care of them). Perhaps the 12th house person feels their spiritual path is blocked or discouraged by the Saturn person, or the Saturn person brings a heaviness to this area. The 12th house is a very spiritual, ethereal house, so structured and pessimistic Saturn can have trouble here.
