The first house represents our physical appearance and persona, so someone’s planets falling in this house is a strong sign of attraction. Whether this attraction is romantic depends on the nature of the planet.
Venus in another person’s first house is a strong indication of instant attraction. A person’s Venus represents what they find beautiful, so when it falls in someone’s first house, the Venus person is strongly attracted. The house person is physically ideal to the Venus person. The Venus person loves the way the first house person dresses and carries themselves. This aspect indicates long-term attraction on the part of the Venus person.
Mars in another person’s first house is also a very powerful indication of attraction. The Mars person loves the first house person’s body and sensual energy, and may be quite forceful and aggressive in getting the first house person’s attention. Neptune is the higher octave of Venus, and represents spiritual, unconditional love and glamorous beauty, so it is understandable that others are enchanted by those with Neptune in the 1st house.
Aspects to the Ascendant
Aspects to the Ascendant are also very powerful indicators of attraction. When someone’s planets make an aspect to your Ascendant, attraction is indicated.
This is especially true for the conjunction, as the house person is the physical manifestation of the planet of the other person. For example, Venus represents what someone finds beautiful, so Venus in conjunction to another person’s Ascendant indicates significant attraction. The Venus person is likely to remain attracted to the Ascendant person for as long as they know them.
The trine and sextile are also strong indicators of attraction. In this case, the Venus person is attracted to the Ascendant person, as the Ascendant person is their ‘type’. In this relationship, the Venus person finds the Ascendant person beautiful and loves giving them compliments.
I also find that Venus square another person’s Ascendant is a very powerful indication of attraction. The Ascendant person may not be the Venus person’s regular type, but there is significant attraction nonetheless. In some ways, I think the square is just as impactful as other hard aspects!
The opposition signifies mutual attraction; both partners find each other ideal! The Venus person is strongly attracted to the first house person, while the first house person feels the Venus person is their perfect partner.
Strong Uranus aspects are probably the strongest indications of ‘love at first sight’. Uranus is like a lightning bolt in synastry, and immediately creates an air of excitement for both partners.

The more good Uranus aspects you share with someone, the more likely you will be instantly attracted to each other. I find the hard aspects (conjunction, square, and opposition) to indicate instant attraction more than the trines or sextile. Hard aspects are simply more impactful; you can ‘feel’ them immediately!
At first, the couple feels they have found their ideal mate. The planet person in particularly feels electrified around the Uranus person; the Uranus person is different than anyone the planet person has ever met, and the possibilities are exciting.
In a Uranus relationship, feelings develop very quickly, but they can disappear just as quickly. Uranus, while exciting and electrifying, is not particularly stable or consistent, which can make settling down into a predictable relationship very difficult. The Uranus person is unstable and unpredictable, which makes settling down into a committed partnership very difficult. The longevity of the relationship depends on the rest of synastry, particularly positive, binding Saturn aspects.
The Nodes
In my experience, the Nodes can definitely signify instant attraction between two people.
The South Node in conjunction to another person’s inner planets can indicate instant attraction. The South Node represents our past lives, so when someone’s planet is in conjunction to our South Node, we likely have a past-life connection.
The nature of the planet can give clues as to whether there is an instant attraction between the couple. I find Venus or the ruler of one person’s 7th house in conjunction to another person’s South Node are good indicators of attraction. These two have likely partnered in previous life, so when they meet, they immediately ‘recognize’ each other on a subconscious level.
I, myself, have experienced Venus-South Node in Synastry, and it was certainly a love-at-first-sight situation. I saw him across a crowded room and instantly fell for him I eventually broke up with him 4 years later, but it was one of my most significant relationships to date.
The North Node is also very attractive, especially when it is conjunct someone else’s Venus or Ascendant. The North Node represents progress and development, and the pull can be hard to resist. When someone’s Venus or Ascendant is conjunct your North Node, you are very attracted to them and possibilities they represent. North Node in conjunction to any planet or angle is hard to resist.

This aspect is tough to handle , especially those who do not like too much conflict or drama in their relationships. The Sun and Mars are both confrontational and driven planets. so a square aspects between them in synastry can lead to much frustration and ego clashes.
In this couple, competitiveness is taken to a new level. These two may see each other more as enemies rather than partners, and tend to irritate each other easily. At some point, the irritation and conflict may become too much, resulting in a huge blowout.
Moon square Mars, Moon opposite Mars
Hard aspects between one person’s Mars and another person’s Moon indicates petty arguments and hurt feelings. In this relationship, the couple know how to get under each other’s skin.
The Moon person may find the Mars person overly aggressive, rude, and hurtful, while the Mars person thinks the Moon person is overly sensitive and emotional. Due to the discomfort and eventual growth that come from Twin Flame connections, Nodal connections are very important in these relationships. I tend to give more weight to North Node connections, as they tend to challenge us to grow out of our old habits and leave our comfort zones. Hard Venus-Saturn Aspects
Hard aspects between Venus (or the ruler of the 7th house) and Saturn can indicate someone who may find themselves in toxic relationships. People with harsh Venus-Saturn aspects often have issues regarding low self-worth and self-esteem. There may be a feeling of being unworthy of love, or being unlovable. There may be a lot of pessimism about love, often due to an early heartbreak they have never gotten over.
Because of their low self-esteem, Venus-Saturn people may feel they are unworthy of true love, and that unconditional love does not exist. As a result, they may marry out of duty or responsibility. They might end up with partners who do not treat them well or value them at all, which is a reflection of how the Venus-Saturn native feels about themselves.
Hard Venus-Neptune Aspects
Hard aspects between Venus (or the ruler of the 7th house) and Neptune in a natal chart can indicate someone who ends up with toxic partners. Neptune is the planet of delusion and illusions, so it can make it hard for people with this aspect to see their romantic partners for who they really are.
Venus-Neptune people tend to be very forgiving and see their relationships through rose-coloured glasses. They create fantasies or idealizations of their partners in their mind, and may tend to ignore their partners flaws to keep their dreams alive.
If the Venus-Neptune native finds themselves in a toxic relationship, it may be difficult for them to fully let go of their partner, for it would ruin the fantasy they’ve built up in their minds. This is why Venus-Neptune natives tend to stay in bad relationships for a long time.
Hard Venus-Pluto Aspects
People who have hard aspects between Venus and Pluto in their natal charts are no strangers to drama. This aspect indicates their relationships are full of jealousy, obsession, drama, and power struggles. People will this aspect attract intense and consuming relationships which quickly fall into a ‘can’t live with you, can’t live without you’ theme to them.

The first thing some astrologers think of when they hear “toxic relationship’ is Pluto! Pluto is the lord of the underworld, and rules transformation, intimacy, and power. On the downside, it can also bring jealousy, obsession, and power struggles into a relationship.
Venus-Pluto aspects (and 7th house ruler-Pluto aspects) in Synastry can indicate toxicity. If one person’s Pluto makes hard aspects to another person’s planets, the Pluto person will likely have the upper hand in the relationship.
The planet person, over time, may not appreciate the Pluto person’s constant need to control them and the relationship, and may attempt the get the power back by resorting to game playing. Things could quickly turn ugly between the couple, for each is trying to dominate and control the other.
I find that Pluto also brings a lot of paranoia into a relationship due to a strong fear of losing each other. Accusations of disloyalty (whether true or not) could feature strongly between this couple. At worst, strong Pluto contacts can indicate abuse (mental, physical, and sexual).
In my experience with Venus conjunct Pluto and Venus square Pluto in synastry, these aspects are very toxic. I always felt my partner was trying to control me, and it was incredibly hard for us to break up. Although I was unhappy in the relationship, I was obsessed with him and could not imagine being apart from him. I’m glad I finally came to my senses and broke up with him, but it was probably my hardest breakup to date.
Neptune and Toxic Relationships
As mentioned before, harsh Neptune aspects are sweet and dreamy, but can also be confusing, deceptive and disorienting.
Hard Neptune in a synastry chart indicates a relationship that is not entirely realistic. This, in itself, does not indicate toxicity, but it can depending on how the couple treats each other.
Unlike Venus-Pluto, Venus-Neptune aspects do not indicate controlling, jealous behaviour between a couple. Instead, it can indicate deception and dishonesty. At least one of the partners does not see (or does not WANT to see) the relationship for what it really is.
In strong Neptune relationships, it is common that the Neptune person continually lies to and deceives the planet person. The planet person sees the relationship through rose-colored glasses and does not want to accept the Neptune person’s flaws, for that would ruin the perfect image in their head of their partner and the relationship. As a result, the Neptune person may choose to forgive the Neptune person.
Relationships like these can become very toxic, mostly due to how much the Neptune person disrespects the planet person, and for how much disrespect the planet person puts up with. For example, Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s relationship was full of Neptune (Tristan is very Neptunian, by the way). Khloe continually forgave him and gave him too many chances until she could no longer take the disrespect.
I am asked this question constantly by my readers and friends. It is not an easy question to answer, but there are some ways to show your ex may come back into your life.
Astrology is all about timing. When a person enters and exits your life is ‘written in the stars’. Plenty of people come back together after time apart, while others stay out of your life for good.
Do retrogrades cause breakups?
I find that a lot of my readers break up during a retrograde. Retrogrades are a time of reviewing and reassessing, so it makes sense that breakups happen during this time. Permanent breakups will usually feature a strong outer planet transit, as well.
I’ve heard from many astrologers that the couple is likely to get back together once the retrograde is over. This can be true, but it really depends.
For example, a friend of mine break up with her boyfriend during Mars retrograde. Mars was retrograde in her 7th house, which is a very good indication that she would experience some relationship difficulties during this time.She called me in a panic, and said she was scared he would be gone forever. I took a look at her chart and saw the retrograde in her 7th house, but I didn’t notice any major transits or progressions that would point to a huge break up.
After the retrograde was over (literally the day after), they got back together. It seems as though he needed a break from the relationship for a few weeks to reassess and review if this was a relationship he wanted to pursue further. That is just how retrogrades work.
On the other hand, I had a major breakup during Venus retrograde many years ago. In this case, I was the one to break up with him. In my own chart, transiting retrograde Saturn was in square aspect to my natal Venus, which is a classic indication of a breakup.
All in all, I do not believe retrogrades themselves can bring permanent breakups, but they are likely to trigger a separation if you already have a ‘break up’ transit happening at the same time. If not, there is a good chance you will get back together after the retrograde is over.
This is especially true if you have a retrograde planet transiting your 5th house, 7th house, or your 5th or 7th house ruler.
Inner planet retrogrades, like Mercury, Venus, and Mars, are very impactful when retrograding in these houses.
When a planet goes retrograde in your 5th house, someone you dated from the past may come back into the picture. This might give you and this person a second chance at a relationship.
When a planet goes retrograde in your 7th house, a former romantic partner might reappear. The two of you have the chance to reassess your relationship, and you might even decide to get back together.
If a retrograde planet transits your 5th or 7th house ruler, a former partner might also reappear. The 5th and 7th house rulers are linked to romance and love, so a transiting retrograde might ignite a reunion with a former flame.
It is important to also check the location of the new moon or full moon that occurs during the retrograde. These lunations, paired with a retrograde, often point to reunions with exes:

The permanence of a relationship like these can be under question, given that you’ve separated before. There are several synastry aspects that point to multiple separations and reunions.
Synastry connections that indicate breakups and reunions

Inner planets (especially Venus) in square aspect to Uranus
When you see a connection like this in a synastry chart, it points to an unpredictable and erratic relationship. In this relationship, there may be plenty of breakups and reunions, or hot-cold energy between the couple.
The Uranus person is likely to bring this energy to the relationship. When the Venus person gets too close or dependent on the Uranus person, the Uranus person feels suffocated and restricted and pulls away. The Uranus person eventually ends up missing the Venus person and reunites with them, only to pull away again for the same reasons as before.
I find that Sun, Moon and Mars in aspect to Uranus indicate an on-off energy as well. Same goes for Uranus in aspect to another person’s 7th house ruler.
Planets conjunct the South Node
When one person’s planets (particularly personal planets like Sun, Moon, Venus, and Mars) is conjunct another person’s South Node, the couple shares a past-life connection. The connection they have is comfortable and familiar, as they have met in previous lives.
This connection tends to keep two people together for a long time. Over time, however, the South Node person, while comfortable, may feel stifled by the relationship. At the same time, the planet person may feel drained by the relationship, for they feel they are constantly ‘giving’ in the relationship.
Despite these issues, the sense of comfort and familiarity may lead these two to reunite over and over. Depending on the rest of the synastry chart (and natal charts), these two may stay together forever, or may eventually break up.
Planets conjunct the North Node
This aspect indicates these two are meant to learn from and grow with each other. The Node person particularly feels a sense of destiny and fate in this relationship, for the planet person acts like a guide for the Node person to realize their full potential.
This can be quite exhilarating, or frightening, depending on the person’s relationship with their North Node. The planet person brings the North Node person out of their comfort zone and challenges them to learn and grow.
As a result of this, the Node person may pull away from the planet person out of fear of change. They may feel very settled in their South Node qualities and be resistant to any type of transformation.
However, as the planet person matures. the pull of the North Node may be too strong to ignore. The Node person knows the planet person is ‘good’ for them, so they may end up reuniting with the planet person over and over.

In conclusion, we must look at the synastry connections and transits of a couple to determine whether they have the potential to get back together:
In synastry, check for harsh Uranus aspects and Nodal connections. These often point to couples who break up and get back together frequently.

Challenging aspects to the 7th house ruler can indicate barriers and difficulties in forming a partnership.
If your 7th house ruler receives a square from your partner’s Saturn, for example, it may be difficult to get the relationships off the ground. There may be obstacles and barriers to you being together.
If your Uranus is square your partner’s 7th house ruler, you bring an unstable and unpredictable energy to your partner’s area of partnership and commitment. Your partner likely sees you as someone undependable and erratic, and it may be difficult for you to make a full commitment to each other.
Personal planets conjunct the North Node (especially Sun, Moon, Venus or ruler of the 7th house)
If your planet makes a conjunction to another person’s North Node, there is a feeling that the two of you are heading somewhere together. Both partners can feel progress taking place when they are with each other. It’s a bizarre feeling to explain: it may feel uncomfortable, but it also feels right.
The planet person is guiding the North Node person towards their potential and encouraging them to come out of their comfort zone. This aspect tends to bind people together for a long time, for the feeling of fate is very strong.
What about the South Node? This CAN bind people together for a very long time, and usually does. However, the South Node is very draining, especially for the planet person, so it might not work out in the long run. Much depends on how comfortable each partner is with their South Node energies. Conjunction to Vertex (especially inner planets and angles)
So many long term couples have significant Vertex contacts in synastry, especially when they involve inner planets and angles. For example, one person’s Sun conjunct another person’s Vertex.
The Vertex is seen as a point of fate, so someone who has strong Vertex aspects with you impacts you powerfully. It feels like this relationship is meant to be, and you can feel this when you are together.
The Sun/Moon Midpoint
I’ve covered the significance of the Sun/Moon Midpoint in this article, however, it is worth repeating how important this point is when it comes to synastry analysis.
Aspects to look out for include:
One person’s angles in hard aspect to the other person’s Sun/Moon Midpoint
One person’s planets (especially Sun, Moon, Venus) in hard aspect to the other person’s Sun/Moon Midpoint
One person’s Vertex or Nodes conjunct or opposite the other person’s Sun/Moon Midpoint
Saturn is the glue that holds a relationship together, so it is important to have some Saturn aspects in your synastry (and Composite chart) to keep things stable and long-lasting.
Saturn can feel both limiting and rewarding, and this depends on how Saturn is handled by each partner in their own natal charts, as well as how their Saturns aspect each other’s planets and angles. People with heavy Capricorn or Saturnian charts may have an easier time with hard Saturn synastry, as they ‘expect’ and are used to things being difficult!
Sextiles, trines, and even conjunctions of one person’s Saturn to another person’s inner planets and angles promote longevity and responsibility in the relationship.
At the same time, I often see hard Saturn aspects in the synastry of successful couples, which can be surprising, given the harsh nature of the planet. In these charts, there are many other aspects which ‘soften out’ Saturn’s harsh edge (Jupiter and Neptune aspects especially).
Aspects to look for:
Saturn conjunct Sun, Moon, Venus, 7th house ruler, 1st house ruler
These houses are: the 1st house, 4th house, 5th house, 7th house and 8th house.
The 1st house represents one’s physical appearance and persona. If someone’s planets fall in this house, there is a good indication of attraction, or at least taking notice of you. Venus and Mars in this house are especially sexy.
The 4th house represents one’s home, family, and past. Someone’s planets in your 4th house indicates they impact you on a deep level. The 4th house is a watery, emotional house, so this person may bring you in touch with deep emotions.
The 5th house represents fun, games, and romance, so planets overlaying in this house indicates a strong bond between the individuals. The house person feels more romantic and flirty around the planet person, and there the two of them feel very good when they are together.
The 7th house represents partnerships and formal commitments, so it is no surprise that this house is important when it comes to relationships. When someone’s planets fall in your 7th house, you cannot help but want to partner with them in some way. You naturally want to build an equal and harmonious bond with them, and want their input in your decisions. They force you to look at the other side of the coin and see a different perspective, almost like they are a mirror to you.
The 8th house represents sex, intimacy, and passion, so this house is an important one to consider in synastry. When someone’s planets fall in your 8th house, they bring up very intense feelings from you. You cannot feel indifferent to them; there is usually a love-hate theme in the relationship. You love them passionately, but despise them equally when you feel upset with them. Sex and intimacy are taken to another level in 8th house relationships; you truly feel you want to merge with each other.
Please note: you should look at the house overlays of both partners. If you find that one person’s planets overlay onto your ‘relationship houses’, while your planets do not overlays onto their ‘relationship houses’, an imbalanced relationship can be indicated.
For example, if my Sun falls in your 8th house, you feel very strongly for me. I bring out very deep and intense feelings out of you, and you feel I have a transformative effect on your life. If your Sun falls in my 11th house, I might not feel the same way. I might see you as more of a friend than a lover, which might be devastating for you.
Sun conjunct Venus (trine, opposition, and sextile also work)
Venus represents love and beauty, while the Sun represents one’s essence and true self. Aspects between these two planets indicate love, pure and simple. This is not a wildly obsessive, romantic type of love, as it is commonly seen in the charts of good friends and family members. In a romantic relationship, however, this aspect is wonderful, for it increases the compatibility between you, and signifies that you really ‘like’ each other!
Moon or Venus in the same sign (i.e. Moon conjunct Moon, Venus conjunct Venus)
I’ve seen way too many of these aspects in synastry charts, so I had to mention them! The Moon represents our emotional nature, so when it is in conjunction to another person’s Moon, emotional compatibility is indicated.
The same can be said about Venus – these two express love in the same way, so it makes sense that they would be happy together. There is an intuitive understanding between them, and neither has to explain themselves too much. They just *get* each other.
Venus conjunct, sextile, or trine Pluto
I had to add Venus-Pluto to this list. It is the ultimate ‘Beauty and the Beast’ aspect, as it indicates the blending of love (Venus) and intense passion (Pluto).
Hard aspects can be hard to deal with, depending on your personality. Some people simply need drama and intensity in their relationships, so they can ‘handle’ hard Venus-Pluto aspects.
Softer aspects, however, are much easier to deal with. They inject a good amount of intensity and passion without being overwhelming. There is a deep love and intensity between the couple without the power struggles and intense jealousy that come with the hard aspects.
The conjunction is a very powerful aspect. It indicates deep desire, jealousy, obsession and love, and it all-consuming for both parties. This type of love transforms the couple, and they see each other as soulmates.
Mars sextile or trine Pluto
This aspect is another one of my favourites. The sexual connection in this case is off the charts!
Mars represents sex and energy, while Pluto represents intensity and passion. As you can imagine, the blending of these two planets indicates a lasting sexual connection.
In this relationship, sex is fulfilling and satisfying for both parties.
Sun conjunct Moon (trine, opposition, and sextile also work)
The Sun represents ones essence and personality, while the Moon represents our emotions and what makes us feel secure. Positive aspects between the Sun and Moon in synastry indicate a ‘marriage’ between the yin and yang. The Sun person feels supported and cared for by the Moon person, and the Moon person feels safe and loved by the Sun person. Together, they make a great team. The opposition is also potent in synastry because it indicates a lot of fascination and attraction between the couple. As they say, “opposites attract”!
Moon conjunct Venus (trine, opposition, and sextile also work)
I may be biased because I have had this aspect so many times (particularly the conjunction), but it is truly a magical connection to share with someone. This is such a sweet, caring and loving aspect. The two people feel very ‘at home’ with each other. Expressing your love and emotions to one another feels easier than usual. You bring out each other’s sweetness and vulnerability. This is such a perfect aspect to find in a synastry chart.
Venus conjunct Mars (trine, opposition, and sextile also work)
Interaspects between Venus and Mars are so spicy hot and deserve a spot in my list of best synastry aspects! These aspects indicate the blending of love with sex, leading to much passion and desire. I’ve found this aspect keeps the fire burning between a couple for a very long time, which is so important when it comes to keeping a relationship fresh. Sex is satisfying and usually quite frequent. The two of you intuitively know how to turn each other on, and can barely keep your hands off each other.
This placement indicates a strong intellectual connection between the couple. This is a relationship full of conversation and communication.
The Mercury person feels the first house person is receptive to their ideas, and loves communicating with them. The first house person admires the Mercury person’s intelligence and generally enjoys bouncing ideas off of them.
On the downside, the first house person might feel overwhelmed by all of the Mercury person’s communication with them. This entirely depends on the first house person’s personality, and how Mercury is aspected in the other person’s chart.
Mercury in the 2nd house
This placement indicates this couple likes communicating about financial matters. The Mercury person has a lot of ideas on how the 2nd house person manages their finances.
Obviously, this would be a wonderful placement if this person is your accountant! In a relationship, it can work very well, especially if the house person is not financially literate.

This aspect indicates the two partners are at odds with each other, particularly when it comes to spirituality and intuition. It may be difficult for these two to get a ‘read’ on each other, and there may be many misunderstandings between them. The two of them may inadvertently deceive or play into each other’s fantasies.
Pluto-Neptune Aspects
Neptune in conjunction to another person’s Pluto indicates a deeply transformative spiritual bond. This is a generational aspect, but it can still be significant, especially if Neptune and Pluto are powerfully aspected in each person’s respective natal chart.
